The Capelet

Okay, so here's a really pretty capelet that I want to make which I found here.

My continuous question is: if you want to substitute the yarn for something, uh, less expensive, how do you adjust the pattern?

Well, for starters you can look in your stash and see what yarn you have where the gauge is similar, thus 12sts & 18 rows = 4". You can start there. You can also check yarndex.com, and do a search by gauge. Enter the required gauge of the pattern and yarndex will spit back yarns. Or, my least favorite but is highly doable. Grab a yarn you wanna do it in. Do a gauge swatch, at least 4" but you should proll do 6 to be safe. Measure how many stitches you get per inch. Measure how many rows you get per inch. Write this down on a piece of paper. Now break out a calculator in case you slow like me. What I do is make two colums. One called patter notes, and the other call My notes, or Revised pattern notes. Record the pattern guage on its side, and your gauge on the required size. Now write down the required cast on amount on the pattern side. Pattern calls for 110 stitches to be cast on. By using the calculator and figuring that every 3 stitiches = 1, I have determined that YOUR cast on must equal 36.7". You will figure that out by using the gauge u came up with and just calculating. I would then make sure my cast on amount is even numbered, just to make my life easier when following the pattern. When you get this far, email me, and I'll help you out the rest of the way.

Hey there, I'm glad you like my capelet pattern design! I've seen pictures of many different yarns used for this pattern, and I think there are lots of versions of the Kidsilk yarn that look pretty- Kid Seta, Karabella's lace mohair... and pretty, filmy yarn with a little halo would be a good bet.

Please don't hesitate to email me if you have any other questions about the pattern, it's a really easy pattern to adjust for different sizes, too, and I'd be happy to help. My only request is, if possible, you don't keep the entire pattern posted on your site. I appreciate that you linked to me, of course, but since the pattern is copyrighted (there's a copyright directly underneath the pattern on my website) I would really appreciate if it was only available on my site. Thank you so much for your understanding. Please email me if you have any questions about my feelings or this comment.

I LOVE your post on "why I knit." The reasons for so many of us go so deep, don't they? Yours are beautifully said.

Thank you all for your advice. I casted on today, using Emmie's Watercolors by Estelle. I'll upload the pic as soon as I can.

Mary-Heather: Thanks for the offer of help. I didn't know it was copywritten. Actually I just skimmed the pattern and saw that it was something I could do and posted it. I'll take it down, no problem.

A.
